Browser stats and cross broswer support

Any web developer should already know about the various browsers that are available and that developing a cross-browser website or RIA can sometimes be a nightmare. Most people will be pointing at IE right now,myself included. IE7 in my eyes has improved greatly though and with all the memory leaks and increased crashing in firefox I could even be swayed into making it my default browser. Hmm well maybe not but I hope firefox can sort out the new problems they seem to have. So with it being a struggle which browsers should the developers focus on?Easy. Just take a look at some browser stats. The stats below are taken from w3schools browser stats which is a website that will always have a place in my heart due to making learning web design easier. Another good resource maybe to check wikipedia's stats.I like to make sure that the websites I make look and function exactly the same in IE7 and firefox. Normally most other browsers will display the same kind of results as firefox so not much tweaking for those.Then you have to take a look at the dreaded two. IE5 and IE6. I almost would have to rewrite the whole of my code to get things working in IE6and 5 but these days, because of the stats I will completely ignoreIE5. I want to do the same for IE6 but that stats show IE6 still as the most popular. This means I still spend a lot of time making sure IE6renders my websites right. I do find sometimes that no matter how many hacks I code, IE6 will not manage to render some subtitle eye candy things, such as CSS block level roll overs (I dont like to use javascript rollovers). As long as the website looks the same and is functional I am happy.
