Multi-touch interface is not a new concept. Although it seems like apples iphone have pioneered the technology it has actually been in research from the 1980's and Jeff Han has been showing working demos of his multi-touch software for sometime now. Do a search on youtube for multi-touch and most the results will be Jeff Han demos. Multi touch technology is a good thing for making user interface a lot simpler such as zooming by using the pinching method. Instead of selecting a zoom tool from a menu of tools and then clicking multiple times to get the correct amount of zoom. Microsoft's recent announcement of Microsoft surface is a great example of how powerful this technology can become.

I have recently landed a job to produce some software for a touch screen with the use of multi-touch technology which I'm really excited about. Obviously with the recent launch of the iphone and its use of multi touch technology multitouch software is soon becoming high demand. First though you will need a FTIR screen. I should be getting mine sent soon. Then you will need to know where to start. A good start would be to know what the multi-touch application will be coded in. As I am looking for an iphone style UI flash would be the best option and I will package it using Adobe AIR.

Unfortunately as I'm aware you cant just plug in a multi touch screen and see it working as windows etc is only used to a single cursor. However there is a library available by the name of touchlib that can track multi touch events such as finger down, finger move and finger released etc. I will be spending a lot of time looking into this starting with the touchlib website and when my touch screen arrives I will finally get to start developing my multi touch application.
